Outstanding After-School Instruction and Safety (OASIS)
In August of 2016, ASES (After-School Education and Safety) changed its name to OASIS (Outstanding After-School Instruction and Safety), to better describe what we do and the type of environment we provide for SJUSD students. The OASIS program is funded by a grant from the State of California to provide a safe, structured, socially and academically enriching after-school environment for students in grades K-8. Students that attend the OASIS program regularly have shown statistically significant improvement in student achievement as well as higher graduation rates from high school. The SJUSD OASIS extended learning program serves approximately 850 students at nine different school sites, including all elementary schools, as well as Monte Vista and North Mountain Middle Schools.
The OASIS program is provided free to all participating students, thanks to the California Department of Education’s After-School Education and Safety (ASES) grant.
OASIS is a collaboration between SJUSD, parents, and several community organizations including Valley-Wide Parks and Recreation, Diamond Valley Arts Council, and The Dancer’s Studio.
OASIS operates at elementary schools from dismissal (M-Th at 3:15 pm, Friday at 1:35 pm) until 6:15 pm, and at middle schools from dismissal (M-Th at 2:00 pm, Friday at 12:00 pm) until 6:00 pm. OASIS offers the following activities:
- A nutritious snack
- A dedicated homework time
- Academic and social enrichment activities
- STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) Project-based learning
- Art instruction
- Dance and Musical Theater
- Outdoor sports and recreation
- Enhanced technology access
Enrollment opens in March of the current school year for the following school year. Parents that attend an OASIS informational meeting in late spring will be given priority. Homeless and foster youth are given additional priority. Once a program is at capacity, additional students enrolling will be put on a waiting list based on the date and time of enrollment packet submission.
